AREDS2 formula ONLY helps intermediate AMD (large drusen ≥125µm or pigment changes)
Macular Health (AMD)
Age-related macular degeneration affects the central vision. Early action with the right formula matters.
Red Flags — Seek Care Immediately
- Wavy/distorted straight lines (metamorphopsia)
- New central blind spot or blur
- Sudden change in color perception
- Any sudden vision change in one eye
What You Need to Know
The essential facts before we get into treatments.
Does NOT prevent AMD in healthy eyes, does NOT treat wet AMD
Smoking = 2–4× risk. Quitting is the single best 'supplement'
Wet AMD needs anti-VEGF injections—no supplement replaces this
What Actually Works (Evidence-Based)
These treatments have RCT data or major society guideline backing (AAO, TFOS, AREDS).
The Amsler Grid: Your Weekly Home Test
The Amsler grid is an at-home eye test that can help detect early signs of retinal disease such as AMD. If you already have dry AMD, it helps you catch progression to the wet form at an early, treatable stage, when anti-VEGF injections can still dry up the leaking fluid and save vision.

How to Use It
- Hold the grid about 12–14 inches away (book-reading distance), with reading glasses on if you wear them.
- Cover one eye and stare at the black dot in the center of the grid.
- Repeat with the other eye. Test each eye separately — with both eyes open, the good eye can mask changes in the bad one.
- Do this once a week. If lines look wavy, dim, irregular, fuzzy, or a section seems blocked out, schedule an eye exam immediately.
What the Changes Mean
An eye without wet AMD usually sees all lines as straight. With wet AMD, fluid accumulates within or under the retina and can form a blister, making straight lines look curved (wavy). Sometimes the fluid interferes with retinal function enough to cause a gray, white, black, or red blind spot in or near the center of the visual field.
Why Weekly Monitoring Matters
The fluid comes from new, leaky blood vessels in the retina. It can often be dried up by treatment with anti-VEGF injections (Beovu, Eylea, Lucentis, Avastin), but only if caught early. Left untreated for months, wet AMD can scar the retina, causing irreversible vision loss. That is why weekly home monitoring matters.
If your doctor tells you the grid looks fine, check it shortly after your exam to establish your personal baseline. Small areas of waviness can exist from large drusen. The warning sign is a new area, an enlarged area, or a new blind spot — that is when you call the retina specialist.

What Doesn't Work (Save Your Money)
Every one of these was popular at some point. None of them survived contact with a randomized trial.
AREDS2 for early AMD or prevention
Beta-carotene (increases lung cancer in smokers)
Bilberry, saffron, astaxanthin for AMD (insufficient evidence — see our Treatments We're Watching guide)
Stem cell clinics / unproven 'vision restoration' therapies
When to See an Eye Doctor
If you're over 50: get a dilated exam every 1–2 years. If you have intermediate AMD: take AREDS2, use Amsler grid weekly, see retina specialist if lines go wavy. Wet AMD? Same-day specialist referral—treatment window is days.
